Boxelder Bug Control in Southeast Michigan

Boxelder bugs are a seasonal nuisance pest that invades homes in large numbers in the fall as temperatures drop. They overwinter in wall voids and other protected spaces and often emerge inside homes during warm spells in late winter and early spring. They do not bite or cause structural damage, but large numbers inside a home are a significant annoyance.

Identification

Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.

Boxelder Bugs

About 1/2 inch, black with red or orange markings along the edges and wings. Flat, oval-shaped. Found in large aggregations on warm surfaces in fall.

Boxelder Seeds

The primary food source. Boxelder bugs feed on the seeds of boxelder, maple, and occasionally ash trees. Homes near these trees see higher activity.

Overwintering Behavior

In fall, boxelder bugs seek gaps in siding, window frames, and rooflines to enter wall voids for winter. They do not reproduce indoors and emerge again in spring.

How We Treat

Boxelder bug treatment is most effective in early fall before bugs begin entering structures. An exterior perimeter treatment significantly reduces the number that successfully overwinter inside. Exclusion work, including sealing gaps in siding and around window and door frames, provides additional long-term protection.

FAQ

Boxelder bugs do not bite, sting, or damage structures. Large numbers indoors are a nuisance. Their excrement can stain light-colored surfaces if populations are large.
Boxelder bugs are drawn to warm, sun-exposed surfaces in fall as they look for places to overwinter. South and west-facing walls are most affected. Homes near boxelder or maple trees tend to have higher populations.
Sealing gaps around windows, doors, and siding before fall is the most effective prevention. A perimeter treatment in early fall can significantly reduce the number that attempt to enter. Removing female boxelder trees from the property also reduces local populations over time.
