Preventing and Controlling Cockroach Infestations

Cockroaches, like all other pests, need food, shelter and water to survive and flourish. Sanitation is key in preventing and controlling cockroach infestations. The following steps should be taken, both in prevention and in control:

Plumbing issues

Make sure that plumbing is insulated in kitchen and bathroom areas to prevent condensation on pipes. Moisture is a key component in any pest infestation.

Sanitation

General sanitation is key. Remove garbage and debris inside and outside, especially around the home's perimeter. Make sure that you vacuum regularly, using the hose and crevice attachment if possible.

Food sources

Cockroaches are scavengers and are true omnivores. They will even eat other roaches if necessary. Any organic material is a potential food source. They prefer animal proteins (meat, cheese, grease), sweets and starches.

Frequently Asked Questions

We use a targeted, multi-step approach to eliminate cockroach infestations. On the initial visit, we apply insect growth regulators (IGRs) to disrupt reproduction, use gel bait in areas where roaches hide and feed, and install glue boards to monitor activity.
You may notice a reduction in activity within the first few days, especially near bait placements. Full control usually takes 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the severity of the infestation and site conditions.
We use insect glue monitors throughout the process to monitor activity levels. These help us track progress, adjust our treatment if needed, and give you a clear picture of how the infestation is responding over time.
We treat for all common species found in Southeast Michigan. For homeowners, the large majority of the time, those are German cockroaches. Commercial locations often have Oriental cockroaches, especially around the various drains throughout.
Reducing food sources and clutter goes a long way. We recommend cleaning up crumbs, storing food in sealed containers, and vacuuming regularly, especially around kitchen and bathroom areas. Avoid using over-the-counter sprays during our treatment program, as they can interfere with the pesticides and materials we apply.
