Cricket Control in Southeast Michigan

Crickets become a common pest nuisance in late summer and fall in Southeast Michigan. Field crickets and house crickets are attracted to light and warmth and find their way into homes and businesses in large numbers as temperatures drop. While crickets are harmless, their chirping can be extremely disruptive, and large numbers can damage fabrics and clothing.

Identification

Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.

Field Cricket

Black or dark brown, 16-22mm. The most common cricket encountered outdoors and in structures in Michigan. Males produce the familiar chirping sound by rubbing their wings.

House Cricket

Yellowish-brown with dark bands, slightly smaller than field crickets. Can establish indoors and chirp year-round if they find a warm, humid environment.

Camel Cricket

Humpbacked, long-legged, and wingless. No chirping. Found in damp, dark areas like basements and crawlspaces. More startling than harmful.

How We Treat

Exterior perimeter treatments in late summer reduce the number of crickets entering structures. Interior treatments address established populations. Reducing exterior lighting at night and sealing entry points supports long-term control.
