Earwig Control in Southeast Michigan
Earwigs are occasional invaders that typically live outdoors under mulch, leaf litter, and stones. They are moisture-seeking insects and move indoors during hot, dry summers or heavy rains. Despite their intimidating pincers, earwigs are harmless to people and pets. Large numbers indoors are typically a sign of excessive moisture near the foundation.
Where They Are Found
Identification
Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.
Appearance
Dark reddish-brown, 12-25mm. Recognizable by the curved pincers at the rear of the abdomen. Slender, fast-moving, and nocturnal.
Damage
Earwigs may feed on tender seedlings, flower petals, and soft plant material in the garden. Indoors they do not cause structural damage.
Moisture Indicator
Consistent indoor earwig activity usually points to a moisture problem , wet mulch against the foundation, drainage issues, or high humidity in basements and crawlspaces.
