Silverfish Control in Southeast Michigan

Silverfish are small, fast-moving insects that prefer dark, humid environments. They are most commonly found in bathrooms, basements, and attics. They feed on starchy materials including paper, book bindings, wallpaper, and fabric. While they do not pose a health risk, they can cause damage to stored items over time.

Identification

Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.

Silverfish

About 1/2 to 3/4 inch, silver-gray, teardrop-shaped with three long tail bristles. Wingless and fast-moving with a distinctive fish-like wriggling motion.

Firebrats

Similar in size and shape to silverfish but brownish and mottled. Prefer hot, dry areas like near furnaces or in attics. Often found alongside silverfish.

Signs of Damage

Irregular feeding marks, small holes, or yellow staining on paper, fabric, or wallpaper. Small dark droppings and shed skins near harborage areas.

How We Treat

Silverfish treatments involve applying products to wall voids, baseboards, and other harborage areas. Reducing humidity with a dehumidifier is one of the most effective long-term controls, as silverfish require high moisture to thrive. Sealing gaps in walls and floors helps reduce harborage.
