Drain Fly Control in Southeast Michigan

Drain flies, also called moth flies, have hairy bodies and wings that give them a fuzzy, moth-like appearance. They breed in the organic film that builds up inside drains, pipes, and other moist areas, completing three of their four life stages in that material before emerging as adults. They are common in food service establishments but can be just as persistent in homes.

Sanitation is an important first step, but professional-grade product application is often necessary to fully eliminate the breeding source and break the population cycle.

Identification

Drain flies are one of several small fly and gnat species that commonly appear indoors. Here is how to tell them apart.

Appearance

Small, about 1/16" to 1/8" long, with a fuzzy moth-like appearance due to fine hairs on their body and wings. Wings are held roof-like over the body at rest. Typically grey or tan in color.

Breeding

Breed in the gelatinous organic film inside drains and pipes. They can complete their lifecycle in as little as one to three weeks under warm indoor conditions, allowing populations to build quickly.

Behavior

Weak fliers that tend to stay close to their breeding source. Most active in the evening. Found resting on walls near drains. Not known to bite or transmit disease, but large infestations are persistent without source treatment.

How We Treat

Effective drain fly control requires locating and treating the breeding source, not just the adult flies. We inspect drains, pipes, and other moist organic areas and apply professional-grade products to break down the breeding medium and eliminate the population. For commercial accounts with floor drains, bar lines, or beverage systems, we tailor the approach to the facility.

FAQ

Drain flies are fuzzy and moth-like with rounded wings held roof-like over the body. Fruit flies are smaller, more rounded, and typically have red eyes. Drain flies breed in the organic film inside drains and pipes, while fruit flies breed in overripe fruit, spilled juice, and fermented liquids. The treatment approach is different for each.
Drain flies breed deep inside pipes where regular cleaning does not reach. The organic film that serves as their breeding medium can build up well below the drain opening, especially in floor drains or slow-draining pipes that are used infrequently. Surface cleaning removes adult flies but does not eliminate the source.
Yes. Drain flies are one of the most common fly issues in food service environments. Floor drains, bar drains, beverage lines, and mop sink areas provide ideal breeding conditions. A drain fly problem in a commercial kitchen is also a sanitation concern for health inspections.
