Millipede Control in Southeast Michigan
Millipedes are moisture-loving arthropods that typically live outdoors in mulch, leaf litter, and soil. They move indoors in fall or during wet weather, often appearing in basements, garages, and first-floor rooms. They are harmless to people and do not damage structures, but large numbers invading a home are an unwelcome nuisance.
Where They Are Found
Identification
Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.
Common Millipedes
About 1 to 1.5 inches, dark brown to black, cylindrical with many legs. Move slowly and curl into a spiral when disturbed. Feed on decaying organic matter.
Defensive Secretion
When disturbed, millipedes secrete a fluid that can cause mild skin irritation in some people. Avoid handling them directly.
Outdoor Habitat
Millipedes require moisture to survive and are found in greatest numbers in mulch, compost, and leaf litter against the foundation. Removing these harborage areas is an important part of long-term control.
