Springtail Control in Southeast Michigan

Springtails are tiny jumping insects that thrive in extremely moist environments. They are most commonly found outdoors in wet soil, mulch, and leaf litter, but migrate indoors during wet weather or when seeking moisture. They are particularly common around overwatered houseplants, leaky plumbing, and damp basements. Springtails do no damage and pose no health risk.

Damp basements and crawlspaces
Mulch and soil immediately adjacent to the foundation

Identification

Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.

Appearance

Extremely small , 1-2mm. White, grey, or dark. Move by jumping using a spring-like appendage under the abdomen. Often mistaken for fleas due to jumping behavior.

Moisture Dependence

Springtails require very high moisture levels to survive. They die almost immediately in dry conditions. Their presence indoors points directly to a moisture source nearby.

Population Size

Can appear in very large numbers. Finding thousands of tiny jumping insects in a sink or drain is a classic springtail presentation.

How We Treat

Finding and correcting the moisture source is the most important step in springtail control. Treating without fixing the underlying moisture problem results in continued activity. We treat active areas and advise on moisture corrections.
