Carpenter Bee Control in Southeast Michigan
Carpenter bees are large, solitary bees that bore perfectly round holes into bare or weathered wood to create nesting tunnels. They are most active in spring and early summer. While a single carpenter bee causes minimal damage, repeated use of the same wood over multiple seasons can cause significant deterioration, and the holes attract woodpeckers who enlarge the damage further.
Where They Are Found
Identification
Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.
Appearance
Large bees, about 25mm. Similar to bumblebees but the abdomen is shiny and black rather than fuzzy. Males have a yellow face; females are all black.
Entry Holes
Perfectly round holes about 12mm in diameter. Coarse sawdust may be visible below active holes. Galleries run horizontally then turn 90 degrees inside.
Behavior
Males are territorial and will hover near humans, but cannot sting. Females can sting but rarely do.
