Centipede Control in Southeast Michigan

The house centipede is the most common centipede found indoors in Southeast Michigan. While their appearance is alarming, they are predatory insects that feed on other household pests. Their presence indoors is usually a sign of an underlying insect problem. A perimeter treatment that reduces the overall insect population is the most effective approach.

Identification

Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.

House Centipede

About 1 to 1.5 inches, yellowish-gray with dark stripes and very long, banded legs. Fast-moving. The only centipede species commonly found indoors in Michigan.

Outdoor Species

Several larger centipede species live in soil and leaf litter outdoors. These occasionally enter through gaps in the foundation but are less common indoors than the house centipede.

Bite Potential

House centipedes can bite if directly handled. Bites are uncommon and typically cause minor, localized pain similar to a bee sting. Serious reactions are rare.

How We Treat

Centipede control focuses on reducing moisture indoors, addressing the underlying insect population they are feeding on, and applying a perimeter treatment around the exterior and in key interior harborage areas. A service plan that keeps general insect pressure low is the most effective long-term approach.

FAQ

House centipedes are not dangerous. They can bite if handled, but bites are uncommon and typically cause only minor discomfort. They do not damage structures or contaminate food.
House centipedes are predators that follow their food source. Their presence indoors usually means there is an underlying population of insects, such as silverfish, cockroaches, or other small arthropods, that they are feeding on. Addressing the food source is important for long-term centipede control.
House centipedes are attracted to moisture. Bathrooms, basements, and laundry rooms provide the humid conditions they prefer. Reducing moisture with a dehumidifier or improved ventilation helps make the environment less hospitable.
