Identification

Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.

House Spiders

Small, brownish, about 3/16 to 5/16 inch. Build messy, irregular webs in corners and undisturbed areas. The most common indoor spider.

Wolf Spiders

Large, hairy, up to 1 inch. Ground-dwelling and fast-moving. Do not build webs. Often seen running along baseboards or floors.

Cellar Spiders

Long, thin legs with a small body. Build loose, drooping webs in basements, crawlspaces, and corners. Also called daddy longlegs.

Are Michigan spiders dangerous?

The vast majority of spiders found in Michigan homes are harmless. The brown recluse is not native to Michigan and established populations do not exist here. The yellow sac spider is the most medically significant species found in Michigan and can deliver a painful bite, but serious reactions are uncommon.
