Stink Bug Control in Southeast Michigan
The brown marmorated stink bug is an invasive species that has become increasingly common in Southeast Michigan. Like boxelder bugs, stink bugs invade homes in fall seeking a place to overwinter. Their defining characteristic is the foul odor they release when disturbed or crushed. Avoid squishing them indoors.
Where They Are Found
Identification
Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.
Brown Marmorated Stink Bug
About 5/8 inch, shield-shaped, mottled brown and gray. Distinctive banded antennae and alternating light and dark bands on the abdomen edge. Releases a strong, unpleasant odor when disturbed.
Overwintering Behavior
Stink bugs enter homes in fall through gaps in siding, around windows, and through utility penetrations. They do not reproduce indoors. They become active again in spring and attempt to exit.
Agricultural Pest
Outside the home, stink bugs feed on a wide variety of fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants, causing significant damage to gardens and orchards.
