Wasp & Hornet Control in Southeast Michigan

Wasps and hornets are common throughout Southeast Michigan from late spring through fall. They become increasingly defensive as the season progresses and colonies grow. Nests near entrances, eaves, or play areas should be addressed promptly. Unlike bees, wasps and hornets can sting multiple times.

Identification

Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.

Paper Wasps

Slender, 3/4 to 1 inch, brown or reddish with yellow markings. Build open, umbrella-shaped paper nests under eaves and overhangs. Less aggressive than yellow jackets but will sting when disturbed.

Yellow Jackets

About 1/2 to 3/4 inch, black and yellow. Nest in the ground, wall voids, or under structures. Highly defensive, especially in late summer and fall. Most common stinging pest complaint.

Bald-Faced Hornets

About 3/4 inch, black with white markings. Build large, gray paper nests in trees or shrubs. Very aggressive when nest is disturbed. Nests can exceed 400 workers by late summer.

How We Treat

Wasp and hornet treatments involve direct nest treatment using professional-grade products appropriate for the nest location and species. Nests in wall voids or the ground may require follow-up. Treatment is most effective in the early morning or evening when workers are in the nest.

FAQ

Yellow jackets and bald-faced hornets in particular can be dangerous to disturb without proper protective equipment and the right products. We recommend professional treatment, especially for nests in wall voids, the ground, or close to entry points.
After a successful nest treatment, remaining workers typically die within a few days. New queens may attempt to build nests in the same general area the following year. A service plan with an exterior perimeter treatment can help deter new nest building.
Colonies begin building in spring and reach peak size in late summer and early fall. Late-season colonies are the most defensive because they are protecting a large, established nest. This is when most stings occur.
