Squirrel Removal
Trapping, removal, and optional seal-up services for homes and businesses throughout Southeast Michigan.
Squirrels in Your Home or Business?
Squirrels in an attic or wall cavity are more than a nuisance. They chew through wiring, insulation, and wood, create entry points for water and other wildlife, and can cause fires if they damage electrical wiring. Once they find a way in, they return consistently to the same openings.
Regal Pest Control uses traps appropriate for the species and situation, with every program beginning with a thorough property inspection. Where entry points are found, we offer an optional seal-up service to help prevent re-entry after trapping is complete.
Gray Squirrels vs. Red Squirrels
Both species are common in Southeast Michigan and both are trapped the same way. The differences are mostly in behavior and how aggressively they cause problems.
Gray Squirrel
The most common squirrel in Michigan and the one most often responsible for attic intrusions. Gray squirrels are larger, less territorial, and tend to live in groups, which means where one gets in, others often follow. They are active year-round and frequently use the same entry points repeatedly. Most of our squirrel jobs involve gray squirrels.
Red Squirrel
Smaller and more aggressive than the gray squirrel. Red squirrels are highly territorial and tend to be solitary. They are relentless chewers and can cause significant structural damage quickly once inside a structure. While less common than gray squirrels, red squirrel infestations can be particularly destructive.
Our Squirrel Removal Process
Every squirrel removal program follows the same five-step approach.
Inspection
We begin with a thorough inspection of the property, looking for signs of squirrel activity, entry points, and conducive conditions. Common entry points include cornice returns, gaps around fascia boards, and openings behind gutters.
Assessment
After the inspection, our technician will review the recommended approach, go over what seal-up options are available at your location, and answer any questions about the scope of the service.
Trapping
We use traps appropriate for the species and situation, with bait selected to target squirrels while minimizing the chance of catching non-target animals. In certain situations, our technician may position a trap directly at or near a confirmed entry point. This is a judgment call made on-site based on observed activity.
Daily Follow-Up
We return daily to check traps, remove any captured animals, and rebait or reposition traps as needed. Five visits are included in the program, spaced 24 hours apart to minimize time in the trap.
Optional Seal-Up
Where entry points are found and accessible, we offer a seal-up service at an additional charge. We typically install aluminum flashing secured with screws and silicone caulking at cornice returns and openings around fascia boards and gutters. These patches are functional and designed to last for years, but they are not permanent replacements and should not be considered a substitute for proper contractor repairs. We do not install ridge guard or seal ridgelines.
Trapping at the Entry Point
Squirrels are creatures of habit. Once they have found and established an entry point, they return to it consistently. In situations where our technician has directly confirmed a squirrel is actively using a specific opening, a trap may be positioned directly at that entry point to intercept the animal.
This is not done on every job. It is a targeted technique used when the situation warrants it, based on what the technician observes on-site. All trap type, placement, and quantity decisions are made by our trained technicians.
