Fly Control in Southeast Michigan

Flies are a persistent pest in both residential and commercial settings. House flies, fruit flies, drain flies, and cluster flies each require a different approach. Effective fly control begins with identifying the species and locating the breeding source. Treating without addressing the source almost always results in the problem returning.

Fly Control Michigan

Where They Are Found

Kitchens and food prep areas
Drain pipes and standing water (drain flies, fruit flies)
Overripe or rotting fruit and produce
Cluster fly populations in wall voids and attics in fall

Identification

Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.

House Fly

Grey with four dark stripes on the thorax, about 6-7mm. Found wherever food waste or organic matter is present. Transmit bacteria and pathogens.

Fruit Fly

Tiny, about 3mm, with red eyes. Breed in overripe fruit, drains, and any moist organic material. Populations can explode quickly.

Cluster Fly

Larger than house flies, slow-moving. Overwinter in large numbers in wall voids and attics. Appear on warm winter days or emerge in spring.

How We Treat

Fly treatment depends on the species. Drain treatments address fly breeding in plumbing. Cluster fly treatments target overwintering sites. Source reduction , removing breeding material , is essential for fruit and house flies. We identify the species before recommending a treatment plan.

FAQ

Cluster flies overwinter in wall voids and attics and emerge on warm days. If you are seeing large, slow-moving flies inside during winter or early spring, cluster flies are the most likely cause.
Fruit flies breed in any moist organic material: overripe fruit, drain lines, mop buckets, recycling bins, and even the soil of overwatered houseplants. Finding and eliminating the breeding source is the most important step.
