Sowbug Control in Southeast Michigan
Sowbugs and pillbugs are not actually insects , they are crustaceans more closely related to crabs and shrimp. They are found outdoors under moist organic debris and occasionally migrate indoors in large numbers. They are completely harmless but can be a nuisance pest in basements, garages, and lower levels of homes. Consistent indoor activity is almost always linked to excessive moisture near the foundation.
Where They Are Found
Identification
Michigan has several species that fall under this pest category. Here is what to look for.
Sowbug vs Pillbug
Sowbugs are flat, grey, oval, and about 15mm. They cannot roll into a ball , that is the pillbug. Both are grey, segmented, and slow-moving.
Habitat
Both species require very high moisture to survive. They die quickly in dry conditions, which is why they rarely establish large indoor populations.
Outdoors
Beneficial decomposers. They break down organic matter in soil and mulch and do not damage plants, structures, or belongings.
